Bird Flu Cases Confirmed in Iowa, Arkansas
Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds issued a disaster proclamation after H5N1 was detected in a commercial turkey flock in Sac County, the state’s eighth case in 2026; the order makes state resources available for tracking, containment and cleanup. Arkansas confirmed its first case of the 2026–27 season on Oct. 27, in a backyard poultry flock in eastern Baxter County. Officials in both states urged commercial and backyard flock owners to strengthen biosecurity, monitor for illness or sudden deaths, and report suspected cases promptly. Iowa officials said the detections pose no immediate public-health concern and poultry products remain safe to eat.
