BLM starts Nevada wild horse gather as Oregon removal faces court limit
The Bureau of Land Management is carrying out two wild-horse gathers in response to limited forage and water: in northwest Nevada, it plans to remove 320 horses from a population estimated at nearly 424, more than three times the sustainable range, while in southeast Oregon it will gather up to 140 horses after wildfire damage and drought reduced winter forage. A court injunction limits the Oregon operation to about one-third of the planned removal, leaving 278 horses on the range; gathered animals will receive veterinary care and may later be offered for adoption. Separately, the BLM and Nevada Department of Corrections will hold an Oct. 24 adoption event in Carson City, offering up to 17 trained horses and two burros for competitive bids starting at $150.
