Boater searches unfold across Canada, U.S.

Search efforts continued for two people from Łutsel K'e, Northwest Territories, who disappeared after leaving Yellowknife by boat on Sept. 4; officials cited possible fuel, navigation or mechanical problems and deployed local rescuers with RCMP support and a Hercules aircraft. Near Alaska’s St. Lawrence Island, the Coast Guard ended its search after rescuing a 15-year-old with hypothermia from a capsized fishing boat and recovering two other boaters who died; a nearby vessel assisted in bringing all three to Nome. Authorities said poor weather and limited aircraft availability complicated that operation. In Michigan, emergency crews were searching for Brett Zimmerman, 25, after finding his unattended dinghy spinning near Suttons Bay, with Coast Guard, dive-team, drone and sonar support involved.
