Brazil’s Lula Meets Mamdani Ahead of Elections

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva met New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani in New York during the U.N. General Assembly, with both discussing the rising cost of living, economic inequality and social programs for working families. Mamdani said he would draw on Lula’s experience implementing anti-poverty initiatives as he addresses pressure on New Yorkers from grocery and housing costs. The meeting brought together two prominent left-wing leaders as Brazil approaches its October 4 presidential election and the United States prepares for November’s midterm elections. Lula, who is seeking a fourth nonconsecutive term, is expected to meet with Sen. Bernie Sanders and deliver the opening address of the General Assembly’s high-level debate before current President Donald Trump speaks.
