Buffalo Expands Compost Program Toward 10,000 Households
Buffalo is expanding its voluntary weekly Scrap It! curbside compost program, which began as a 2,000-household pilot in 2023, with a goal of serving 10,000 residents within five years and diverting more than 6,000 tons of organic waste from landfills. The expansion will initially welcome about 1,000 households from the waitlist, with Farmer Pirates Compost continuing to collect and process food scraps. The city says the program will make composting more accessible, reduce landfill waste and help inform climate and emissions planning; the compost is reused by local farmers and gardeners.
