Amazon Expands Prime Air to 500 Cities by 2026

Amazon announced a sixfold expansion of its Prime Air drone delivery to nearly 500 U.S. cities and towns by the end of 2026, adding markets such as Chicago, Cleveland, Syracuse, New York, Atlanta, and Boise, with each site covering about 175 square miles and offering deliveries in as little as 30 minutes for items under five pounds. The plan accelerates a broader race among retailers to provide ultrafast delivery, pitting Amazon against Walmart and alliances like Wing and Zipline, as both seek to shorten wait times even as regulatory and noise concerns persist. The rollout emphasizes suburban corridors and non-urban flight paths, highlighting challenges from trees, pools, and drop-zone logistics, while noting that drones remain a supplement to traditional delivery rather than a complete replacement for drivers. Hundreds of thousands of drone deliveries have already occurred this year, signaling growing adoption but still a small share of overall volume. Separately, Walmart is pursuing drone expansion in California Oceanside, proposing 12 take-off and landing pads for six-mile-radius deliveries and preparing for permitting and FAA requirements, with potential service starting in 2027. Industry observers caution that consumer interest and the long-term economics of drone delivery remain uncertain, even as the technology scales across dozens of new communities.
