Texas Election Shift Offers Hemp Industry Hope, Not Relief
Texas hemp businesses welcomed Vikki Goodwin’s defeat of Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, whose push to ban hemp-derived THC products drew broad opposition. Goodwin and governor-elect Gina Hinojosa have signaled support for easing restrictions, while San Antonio Councilman Jalen McKee-Rodriguez is urging the city to advocate for broader cannabis legalization. The leadership shift is unlikely to quickly restore products or resolve uncertainty: state rules and court actions have disrupted sales, and federal restrictions set to take effect Dec. 11 could affect smokable THC products, including THCA flower. Advocates are calling for clear standards on age limits, testing, labeling and enforcement; Goodwin has also supported using sales-tax revenue to fund health coverage for low-income Texans. Separately, Illinois will tighten access to intoxicating hemp products starting Nov. 12 by requiring sales through licensed cannabis dispensaries, a change that could hurt hemp cafés and retailers while benefiting dispensaries.
