Butterfly Conservation, Events Span Four Regions
Western monarchs are facing a severe population decline driven by pesticides, habitat loss and climate change; the Sacramento Valley and Central Valley are important migration and breeding areas, where planting milkweed and other habitat may support recovery. Federal officials have delayed a decision on whether to list monarchs as threatened until 2030, despite a federal report warning of a high extinction risk by 2080 under current conditions. Other butterfly-focused efforts highlight practical ways to support pollinators: a Fallbrook group shared host plants, seeds and garden advice at a community fair, while a Laredo event is inviting families to learn about monarch migration. The comma butterfly, meanwhile, survives winter as an adult, using leaf-like camouflage and sheltered spots; leaving some garden areas wild can provide useful habitat.
