Buying Has Lower Net Cost in 41 Markets
A Lower analysis of housing markets near 54 highly ranked public universities found that renting a two-bedroom home was cheaper month to month in 89.6% of markets. The comparison changes when considering a four-year ownership period, because mortgage principal payments and possible home-price appreciation can build equity, although interest, taxes, insurance and FHA mortgage insurance remain costs. The analysis compared average asking rents with estimated ownership costs for an FHA loan requiring 5% down; its reported findings suggest the best choice depends on whether families prioritize lower monthly costs or potential equity after four years.
