Bynum urges ICE pause after Bend school shooting
Oregon Rep. Janelle Bynum urged ICE to pause non-emergency enforcement in Bend and Deschutes County after the Silver Rail Elementary shooting, saying reported ICE activity is making immigrant families afraid to seek counseling, attend community gatherings, speak with investigators or return to school. The Oct. 15 attack killed three children and a teacher and critically injured a student and another teacher; the school remains closed as the community mourns and support services are offered. Bynum said ICE agents were in the county on the morning of the shooting and asked the agency to let families access help without fear of detention or deportation. Local organizations reported enforcement activity in the area, while ICE and Homeland Security had not publicly responded to inquiries in the cited reports.
