Calypso icon Mighty Sparrow dies at 91
Slinger Francisco, the Trinidadian calypso legend known as the Mighty Sparrow, died peacefully in New York at 91 after a brief illness, his family said. Across a career spanning more than seven decades, he helped bring calypso to international audiences with a powerful voice, sharp wit and songs exploring politics, social issues, relationships and everyday life. A celebrated performer, songwriter and mentor, Sparrow influenced generations of artists and leaves a legacy deeply woven into Caribbean culture; his family also said he embraced Christianity and was baptized into the Seventh-day Adventist faith in his final days.
