Canada Announces $100M Aid for Palestine

Prime Minister Mark Carney announced $100 million in new Canadian aid for Palestinians on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. Eighty million dollars is for humanitarian aid and twenty million for security and development initiatives, including West Bank police training. Carney said the package addresses "immense human suffering" and seeks to preserve the possibility of a two-state solution while noting existential threats from Hamas and from Iran and its proxies. Canada has pledged more than $600 million for Palestinian civilians since October 2023. He condemned the E1 settlement plan totaling 3,401 housing units and joined France and the UK in banning imports of goods from West Bank settlements. Documents tabled in Parliament this week detail damage to Canadian-funded aid projects. Carney planned to co-chair a meeting with the UK and French prime ministers and the UN secretary-general on a two-state solution and Security Council Resolution 2720.
