Canada Sees Limited Trade Progress as US Predicts Deal Soon
Canada-U.S. trade negotiations have picked up somewhat, but a Canadian official described progress as limited, and no agreement has been reached. Talks are focused in part on U.S. tariffs on Canadian steel and autos; Prime Minister Mark Carney says Canada will not accept the terms offered in August and that movement depends on the U.S. coming closer to Canada’s position. The Trump administration has sounded more optimistic, with President Donald Trump predicting a deal could come soon and Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins saying negotiations are advancing. Rollins also criticized Canada’s treatment of U.S. agriculture, while the White House has announced exemptions from 50% tariffs for some agricultural and packaging machinery and other goods.
