Canada, Turkey Expected to Deepen Defence, Energy Ties
Canada and Turkey are expected to sign a declaration during Prime Minister Mark Carney’s visit to strengthen cooperation on defense, energy, trade and diplomatic ties, with committees tasked with developing action plans and advancing free-trade talks. Carney is due to meet President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in Ankara and Turkish business leaders in Istanbul, in his first dedicated bilateral visit to Turkey as prime minister. Nuclear power is expected to feature prominently, alongside potential Turkish purchases of Canadian liquefied natural gas and critical minerals; a working group may assess CANDU’s proposal for a nuclear plant on Turkey’s Black Sea coast. The trip also reflects Ottawa’s effort to diversify trade and partnerships beyond the United States amid strained relations with Washington.
