Breast cancer survivors describe unexpected support and lasting challenges
Four accounts highlight different dimensions of breast cancer: a diagnosis can reshape a young couple’s plans, while treatment and life afterward can bring lasting physical and emotional challenges. Sara Sandoval, diagnosed with Stage 4 breast cancer at 35 shortly before her wedding, and her husband describe confronting aggressive treatment while holding on to hope. In Missoula, survivors Rebecca Sargent and Darci Hanson found an unexpected source of support in one another, sharing the emotional understanding that can be hard to find outside the experience. Another personal account reflects on how a mother’s cancer journey prompted her child to value consistent, intentional self-care, while survivorship guidance emphasizes individualized support for issues including menopause, body image, emotional health and long-term well-being.
