Capital Region Water accidentally exposes customer billing data in emails
Capital Region Water accidentally attached a file listing thousands of customers’ billing details to electronic bills sent in the Harrisburg area. Reports say the document exposed names, account numbers, email and home addresses, and amounts due; one report counted 5,887 accounts and 4,258 customer names. The utility said the file did not include passwords, Social Security numbers, driver’s-license numbers, or financial account information, and said it is investigating and addressing the incident. It apologized and warned customers that it will never ask for sensitive account or banking information by phone, text, or email.
