CBP Officer Convicted of Using Gun and Badge to Assault Four Women

A federal jury convicted Customs and Border Protection officer Luis Uribe of using his badge and government-issued gun to sexually assault and rob four Chinese women in Chicago’s suburbs in 2022. Uribe, who was assigned to O’Hare International Airport, was found guilty of 10 counts of deprivation of civil rights under color of law and one firearm charge, exposing him to a mandatory minimum sentence of seven years and potentially life in prison. Prosecutors said he forced his way into hotel rooms in Schaumburg and Naperville, threatened the women and assaulted them; his defense argued that the encounters were consensual and that the women were part of a scheme targeting him. The verdict highlighted concerns that criminalization and stigma surrounding sex work can make victims more vulnerable and discourage them from reporting abuse by law enforcement officers.
