Century-Long Depew-Lancaster Football Rivalry Ends

Lancaster and Depew’s century-long high school football rivalry ended with their final matchup, closing a tradition that began in 1919 and brought generations of players, alumni and fans together. The schools are ending the series because Lancaster’s much larger enrollment has created a substantial gap in team size, with Depew officials citing competitive balance and player safety. Coaches and alumni described the annual game and its surrounding festivities as a cherished community tradition, and supporters gathered for a final celebration after the game.
