Charleston Battery Advances Past Rhode Island on Penalties
The Charleston Battery advanced to the USL Championship Eastern Conference semifinals by defeating Rhode Island FC 5-4 on penalties after a 1-1 draw that went through extra time. Miguel Berry scored a late equalizer to keep Charleston’s season alive, and backup goalkeeper John Berner—sent on just before the shootout—made a crucial save before Jeremy Kelly converted the decisive kick. The win avenged two recent postseason eliminations by Rhode Island, including last year’s penalty-shootout loss. Charleston will next face Hartford Athletic in the conference semifinals.
