Charlie Kirk’s Mother Pushes Back on Claims of Rift With Erika

Charlie Kirk’s mother is pushing back against claims that his parents have blamed his widow, Erika Kirk, for his death or become embroiled in a family dispute over his estate and Turning Point USA. According to Fox News, during a rare interview with Vanity Fair, Kathryn Kirk said Charlie’s death has brought her and Erika closer together rather than driven them apart.

She also said her son would be deeply upset by the treatment Erika has received on social media. “We were 100% behind her,” Kathryn told the magazine. “Erika and I have, through the trauma, grown closer,” she added. “We knew Charlie in a way that no one else did. We can look at each other’s eyes, and we know the depth of our despair.” Kathryn had largely avoided speaking with journalists, according to Vanity Fair. She said she prefers to remain a private citizen but acknowledged that her silence had contributed to speculation about her relationship with Erika. The interview also detailed how quickly media attention reached the family after Charlie was killed. Kathryn recalled that a TMZ reporter contacted her before she had even spoken with her daughter. The magazine also reported that Charlie and Erika had been making plans for their family amid what it described as increasing death threats. Doug DeGroote, a Turning Point board member who oversees the couple’s personal finances, said they had been working on their will and were scheduled to sign the documents the Monday after Charlie’s death. Charlie had also discussed security measures with Erika and their pastor the night before his death, including bulletproof glass shields and protective vests, according to Vanity Fair. Several Turning Point board members, Erika and other people close to Charlie said he had made clear that he wanted Erika to take over the organization if something happened to him. Kathryn said Charlie had kept his parents out of those conversations because he knew they would feed into their fears. “He knew her more than anyone,” a former Turning Point employee said of Erika’s selection to lead the organization. Erika also described the emotional aftermath of Charlie’s death, including watching surveillance footage during a September preliminary hearing. She recalled silently pleading for the shooting to stop before gripping Kathryn’s arm and crying as the footage showed the gunman preparing to fire. At a Utah hospital, Erika insisted on seeing Charlie’s body despite being advised against it. She said she wanted to kiss her husband because she had not gotten the chance to say goodbye that morning. Turning Point USA said Erika viewed her appearance on Vanity Fair’s New Establishment list as an opportunity to tell her story to people less familiar with her, Charlie and the organization. The organization also praised Kathryn for publicly defending her daughter-in-law, describing the Kirk family as close and protective of one another.
