South Korea's Seoul High Court ordered Chey Tae-won to pay 944 billion won ($644 million) to his former wife, Roh Soh-yeong, in a retrial of their divorce settlement, down from 1.38 trillion won. The court again included Chey’s SK Inc shares and other holdings in the marital estate, valuing assets as of 16 April 2024. The ruling follows the Supreme Court’s remand, which ruled that funds linked to Roh’s father could not be treated as a legally protected contribution to the assets. The dispute centers on Chey’s roughly 17.9% stake in SK Inc and SK Group’s booming AI-related business, including SK Hynix’s role in supplying memory chips for Nvidia. Chey’s net worth is cited around $5.6 billion, underscoring the case’s potential as one of South Korea’s most expensive divorces if finalized. Both sides have the right to appeal after a full judgment is issued.
