Chicago Woman Charged in 7-Year-Old’s Fatal Stabbing

A 7-year-old girl, identified in reports as Eddimar (also rendered Edimari) Hernandez Chacon, was fatally stabbed multiple times while walking with her older sister on Chicago’s South Side on Oct. 3. Police say 48-year-old Shavon Gayden approached the child on a sidewalk in the East Chatham neighborhood and attacked her with a sharp object; the girl died at Comer Children’s Hospital. Bystanders chased and detained Gayden, who was injured and taken to a hospital before being placed in police custody. Gayden has been charged with first-degree murder and was scheduled for a detention hearing; police have not disclosed a motive or said whether she knew the child. Court records cited by one report show Gayden had prior battery cases and an outstanding felony warrant.
