China detains 52 Singaporeans in Guangxi amid pyramid scheme probe

Chinese authorities have arrested and detained 52 Singaporean citizens in Guangxi over suspected involvement in pyramid-scheme activities and related offenses, with investigations still underway. Singapore’s Foreign Affairs Ministry and police are seeking more information from their Chinese counterparts while providing consular assistance. Singaporean officials have visited all 52 detainees three times to check on their welfare, relay family messages, convey requests and help with administrative matters, while Second Minister Sim Ann has met relatives of most of them. Singapore said it would support its citizens and stress due process but would not interfere in China’s judicial proceedings. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said cases involving foreign nationals would be handled according to Chinese law, while Singapore officials urged caution about investment schemes involving recruitment, large upfront payments or unusually high returns.
