China Expels 33 Senior Officials Ahead of Party Congress
China’s Communist Party has formally confirmed the expulsion of 33 senior military, party and government officials for what it described as serious violations of discipline and law. The expelled officials include former Central Military Commission Vice Chairman Zhang Youxia, other senior military leaders, former Xinjiang party chief Ma Xingrui and former officials in diplomacy, industry and financial regulation. The party also removed former financial regulator Li Yunze from his party posts and elected Central Military Commission Vice Chairman Zhang Shengmin to the Politburo. The purge and pledges of stricter cadre oversight come ahead of next year’s party congress, where Xi Jinping’s potential fourth term is expected to be decided.
