China Names Party Chiefs for Tibet, Gansu, Qinghai

China has appointed Hu Changsheng, 62, as Communist Party secretary of Tibet, replacing Wang Junzheng and making him the region’s top political official. The reshuffle also moves Qinghai Party Secretary Wu Xiaojun to lead Gansu, while Qinghai Governor Luo Dongchuan becomes Qinghai’s party chief. Hu pledged to maintain stability, strengthen ethnic unity, combat separatism and tighten the party’s management of religious affairs in Tibet. The personnel changes come ahead of a key party meeting and the expected 21st Communist Party Congress, where provincial appointments could provide indications of broader leadership plans.
