Despite modest season Ciganda seals Europe’s 15-13 Solheim Cup win
Carlota Ciganda, despite a modest individual record and four missed cuts in five majors this year, excelled while representing Europe in the Solheim Cup. The 36-year-old Spaniard defeated Jennifer Kupcho in singles to secure the final point of Europe’s 15-13 victory in the Netherlands. Ciganda said competing for Team Europe gives her exceptional focus and that she enjoys beating the Americans, reflecting the intense but generally sporting rivalry between the teams. The U.S. team also faced criticism after publicly celebrating with beer on the bus following Saturday’s play, prompting Europe to sing, “They drink on Saturday. We drink on Sunday.” The victory carried added personal significance for Ciganda after Kupcho’s spectacular 93-foot birdie during the previous day’s competition.
