Cities weigh renaming Chavez sites after allegations
Cities in California are reconsidering places named for labor leader Cesar Chavez after reports that he sexually abused women and girls. In San Francisco, a working group selected Las Campesinas, meaning “female farmworkers,” as the proposed new name for the 3.2-mile street, with a formal city approval process still ahead and some residents favoring other names. Riverside’s Parks and Recreation Commission recommended renaming its Chavez-named community center Eastside Community Center, while Berkeley’s working group recommended Sí Se Puede Park for the waterfront park; both proposals still require city action. The efforts aim to recognize farmworkers and local communities while addressing the allegations associated with Chavez’s legacy, though residents and officials have raised differing preferences about the new names.
