Classical concerts pair Handel with Britten and use candlelight across cities
The listings span classical concerts, intimate musical performances and music theater. Illinois Classical’s Oct. 25 broadcast includes works by Haydn, Mendelssohn, Brahms, Mozart and Beethoven, alongside music by Spanish composers Matilde Salvador and Rosa Garcia Ascot. The Cleveland Orchestra’s “Royal Illuminations” program pairs Handel’s Water Music and Music for the Royal Fireworks with Britten’s Les Illuminations, sung by Julia Bullock, and Stacy Garrop’s Spectacle of Light. In London, Lamplight Concerts by Duo Atlantis uses vocals, piano and handcrafted stained-glass lamps to create an atmospheric exploration of light, love, loss and innocence; Bellingham’s Candlelight Concerts offer performances amid flameless candles, with programs ranging from classical works to popular-music tributes. A London stage adaptation of pianist Władysław Szpilman’s wartime memoir combines his music with scenes from his family’s experience in Nazi-occupied Warsaw, but the reviewer says its detached narration weakens the emotional impact.
