College Basketball Roster Spending Expected to Nearly Double
Power-conference men’s basketball programs are projected to spend substantially more on rosters for 2026–27, with the average Power Five roster estimated at $13.5 million and SEC programs leading conference averages. Several teams, including North Carolina, Kentucky and other high-profile contenders, are estimated to spend at least $20 million, though spending does not necessarily align with preseason rankings. South Carolina is estimated in a middle spending tier despite recent struggles, while Kansas State is among the lowest-budget power-conference programs; coaches and players there say their focus is on winning rather than matching rivals’ spending.
