College Hockey Season, Conference Openers Set

Several college hockey teams are beginning conference play this weekend, including Omaha at defending national champion Denver and Arizona State at St. Cloud State in the NCHC. Omaha arrives after sweeping Lindenwood for its first two wins of the season, while Arizona State brings a three-game winning streak and a program-record 26 goals through six games. Penn State also opens Big Ten play on the road against No. 18 Minnesota after snapping an 0-4 start with a sweep of Canisius; coach Guy Gadowsky said the team still has substantial work ahead. In women’s hockey, Vermont begins Hockey East play at No. 15 Boston College after two narrow losses to Cornell, while carrying an eight-goal total conceded through six games. Brown and Yale open their men’s seasons against each other, with both programs beginning new coaching eras.
