Colorado Avalanche Risks Rise Ahead of Storm
The Colorado Avalanche Information Center has warned that a late-October storm could raise avalanche danger in Colorado’s high country, where rain on existing snow may trigger wet slides before colder temperatures bring accumulating snow and the possibility of dry avalanches. The greatest concern is on steep, snow-covered slopes with wind-drifted snow, especially at high elevations; even a small slide can carry someone into rocks and cause serious injury. Backcountry travelers are urged to choose lower-angle routes, avoid steep slopes and areas beneath them, and carry appropriate safety gear and have the training to use it. CAIC said its daily forecasts would resume November 1, with updates available before then as conditions change.
