Parks gain solar-powered and phoenix-inspired sculptures this season
Communities are adding or repositioning public sculptures in parks and arts districts, with projects ranging from playful installations to works intended to foster reflection and connection. In Jersey City, Milène Guermont’s blinking, solar-powered “Benben NJ” has brought a futuristic touch to Liberty State Park, while Champaign has installed two colorful sculptures in city parks for a two-year display. Buffalo’s new phoenix-inspired sculpture at LoveU Buffalo Art Park celebrates Black Rock’s resilience and supports the park’s focus on mental wellness, suicide prevention, and community connection; Hickory’s forthcoming “Ethereal Trinity” will join an art walk featuring public art and historic markers. In Pontypool, a sculpture of embracing lovers has been temporarily moved within the park to protect it during work on a former toilet block, with plans for it to return to the Italian Gardens after construction.
