Communities prepare for winter shelter demand
Homeless-service providers in several communities are preparing for greater demand as colder weather approaches. In West Valley City, Utah, Switchpoint’s 120 beds were full during a rainy cold spell, and the shelter opened during the day; Utah’s seasonal Code Blue operations are scheduled to begin Oct. 15. In Waynesboro and Staunton, Virginia, WARM has secured 16 of the 18 host sites needed for its Nov. 23–March 29 shelter season and is seeking additional hosts and overflow locations, while a shortage of church volunteers could force it to rent unbudgeted space. WARM reported serving 26% more people last season, underscoring the pressure on available shelter capacity. In Knox, Australia, the council has allocated funding for an outside organization to establish the municipality’s first overnight winter shelter program in 2026–27, with proposals due Nov. 10, 2026.
