Consumer Confidence Weakens Across Australia, US, UK
Consumer confidence is weakening across Australia, the United States and the United Kingdom, with inflation and economic uncertainty weighing on households. In Australia, confidence edged down as unemployment rose to its highest level since 2021; economists said labor-market weakness could limit further rate increases, while elevated inflation expectations and persistently low confidence point to subdued spending. In the United States, an October sentiment reading fell to its lowest level since 2011, with consumers reporting less comfort with purchases and declining confidence in investments and job security. In the UK, household confidence fell for a third straight month to its lowest level since July 2023, as 57% of respondents expected interest rates to rise. British households also reported worsening financial expectations, reluctance to make major purchases and sustained pessimism about the job market, adding pressure ahead of the government’s Budget.
