Consumers Energy Seeks More Time on 13-Dam Sale
Consumers Energy has asked Michigan regulators to postpone a decision on its proposed sale of 13 hydroelectric dams to Confluence Hydro until Dec. 17, saying more time could help reach a settlement and keep the dams operating. The utility says the arrangement would maintain the dams for at least 30 years and save customers about $500 million compared with decommissioning them. Opponents, including Attorney General Dana Nessel and conservation and business groups, dispute that settlement talks are progressing and urge regulators to rule without another delay. They have also raised concerns about private-equity ownership and whether the deal provides adequate safeguards for dam maintenance and safety.
