Contractor Pleads Guilty in North Korean IT Scheme
John Allen Kurrle Jr., a Gainesville man who worked for a U.S. government defense contractor and held a top secret security clearance, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud for helping foreign nationals use U.S. identities to seek remote jobs at American companies. Prosecutors say he received company-issued laptops at his home and enabled people outside the United States to access them, helping make the workers appear to be based domestically; the applications led to nine job offers. The case reflects a broader North Korean effort to place IT workers in remote jobs to evade sanctions and generate revenue for the regime, though authorities have not publicly identified the foreign participants in Kurrle’s scheme. He is scheduled to be sentenced in January 2027 and faces up to 20 years in prison.
