Councils Warn Residents of Tax Refund Scams
Councils in Durham and Pembrokeshire are warning residents about phishing messages that falsely promise council tax refunds, sometimes citing a house move, new discount or account reassessment. The emails, texts and unofficial websites may use convincing language and official-looking branding to persuade people to click links and provide personal, bank or card details. Residents should not click links or share information in unexpected messages, and should verify claims by contacting their council through contact details found independently on its official website. Anyone who has shared financial information should contact their bank promptly and report the suspected fraud. Other authorities have also warned about tax-related scams, while an Iowa audit warning highlighted how convincing invoice fraud can put public funds at risk.
