Crews fortify beaches amid widespread king-tide erosion
Unusually high tides and strong winds have prompted coastal communities to reinforce shorelines and warn the public about flooding and erosion risks. In Jupiter, Florida, Palm Beach County brought in sand to protect the beach and dune near the historic Civic Center after erosion damaged a staircase; the center and nearby beach crossovers remain closed, with no reopening date set. In the Los Angeles area, crews built sand berms along Venice and Santa Monica Bay beaches amid a Coastal Flood Advisory, while officials made sandbags available and urged people to stay clear of the barriers. In San Diego’s Mission Bay, crews raised and reinforced berms after an earlier breach flooded homes, and city officials warned that walking or moving equipment over the defenses could weaken them ahead of another high-tide period.
