Dallas Megachurch Plans Vote on Leaving UMC

The Church Council of Highland Park United Methodist Church in Dallas has unanimously recommended that the congregation vote on ending its ties with the United Methodist Church, with a vote scheduled for Oct. 25 and 26. The move follows a dispute with the denomination’s Horizon Texas Conference over 2022 changes to the church’s governing documents, including provisions affecting its relationship to UMC rules and a potential departure; the conference has sued, arguing the changes violate church procedures and the denomination’s property trust clause. Highland Park’s leaders say the changes were lawful and assert the church’s right to govern itself, while Bishop Ruben Saenz Jr. says UMC rules govern clergy appointments and congregational property, and has expressed a desire for reconciliation. The congregation’s decision could affect the church’s property, assets, clergy and relationships with other United Methodists, as well as mark the departure of a prominent and wealthy UMC congregation.
