DeepSeek Plans UN Security Council AI Risks Briefing
Chinese AI company DeepSeek is expected to brief the U.N. Security Council on September 23 alongside OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and likely senior representatives of Anthropic, as the 15-member body examines how artificial intelligence could affect international security. Other Chinese developers, including Moonshot AI, have also been invited, although DeepSeek founder Liang Wenfeng is not expected to attend. The session, convened by France during the U.N. General Assembly’s high-level week, will address malicious uses of AI and the risk that increasingly capable systems could evade human control. The meeting comes amid warnings from AI executives and U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres about the dangers of rapid development, while President Donald Trump has argued that existing safeguards are adequate. It also highlights tensions between Washington and Beijing over AI governance, even as the two countries pursue further discussions on safety measures, technical standards and protocols for responding to serious incidents.
