Districts Weigh School Closures Amid Financial Strains

San Antonio’s North East Independent School District is considering consolidating Oak Grove, Montgomery and Dellview elementary schools into nearby campuses for the 2027–28 school year, a move officials estimate could save about $4 million. District leaders cite declining enrollment and a major budget deficit; enrollment has fallen sharply in recent years, and NEISD has already closed three other campuses ahead of the 2025–26 school year. The proposal has not been approved, and officials presented recommendations to trustees while seeking community feedback. Families and school supporters have raised concerns about transportation, program capacity and the effects of closing schools with deep community ties, while urging the district to consider options beyond campus closures.
