DOJ plans 1,000 election monitors nationwide
The Justice Department plans to send election monitors to polling places in New Haven, Connecticut, as part of a nationwide effort that officials say will cover all 50 states. New Haven’s Democratic and Republican registrars say Connecticut law does not permit federal monitors inside polling places, and they warn that their presence could make voters feel intimidated or less welcome amid heightened disputes over election integrity. The department says monitors will observe compliance with federal voting-rights laws without interfering, and Connecticut officials say they have agreed the monitors will remain outside the restricted area around polling sites. Minnesota counties have likewise said federal monitors cannot observe from inside polling places under state law, while an election-law advocate said monitors can document possible violations but cannot question voters or demand identification.
