DOJ Survey Estimates 25% Drop in Violent Victimization
The Justice Department’s 2025 National Crime Victimization Survey found serious nonfatal violent victimization fell 25% from 2024, while property victimization declined 19%. Aggravated assault fell 31%, and burglary and motor-vehicle theft victimization also dropped substantially; unlike police-reported crime statistics, the survey captures incidents whether or not they were reported to law enforcement. The Trump administration credited its crime policies for the declines, though the figures alone do not establish what caused them. The DOJ cautioned that a redesigned survey introduced in 2025 means the estimates are not directly comparable with those produced under the previous methodology. Separately, FBI data showed reported violent crime and murder also fell in 2025.
