Dollar climbs to 18-month high amid Middle East and Ukraine attacks
The U.S. dollar climbed to an 18-month high and held near that level as escalating attacks on energy infrastructure and shipping in the Middle East and Ukraine fueled demand for safe-haven assets and pushed oil prices higher. The euro and yen weakened as higher energy costs weighed on major oil-importing economies, while Asian currencies were mostly little changed. Investors are watching U.S. inflation data and the Federal Reserve’s policy outlook for clues to the dollar’s next move; in India, central bank measures to curb dollar demand helped the rupee gain.
