Downtown Sarasota Sees Tower Rejection, Landmark Demolition

Downtown Sarasota’s development landscape is seeing high-rise proposals, historic-building changes and a shift toward senior housing. The city again rejected the controversial Obsidian tower after years of dispute with nearby residents, and the developer’s attorney warned that further legal action could follow. Elsewhere, a historic brick building that once housed the area’s oldest law firm could be demolished for an 18-story, 197-residence condominium tower, while demolition is underway at the Mira Mar site for a project that will preserve part of the original building and add 70 residences in two towers. Senior housing is also taking shape: a 161-unit rental community is under construction, and a separate former condo proposal has been reworked as a 169-unit independent-living development.
