Asheville police identified the driver killed in an Oct. 14 rollover crash near McDowell Street and Doctors Drive as 74-year-old Phillip Douglas Penland of Arden. Investigators said Penland suffered a medical emergency while driving a Chevrolet Trailblazer south on McDowell Street, lost control, and overturned. He was taken to Mission Hospital, where he later died; police have not clarified whether the medical emergency or crash injuries caused his death.
