Drivers sentenced to 20 years in fatal crashes
Three drivers were sentenced to 20 years in prison in separate fatal-crash cases. In Honolulu, Mitchell Miyashiro received consecutive sentences for killing 16-year-old Sara Yara in a 2023 hit-and-run; he had run a red light, fled without helping the victims and falsely reported his truck stolen. In Sarasota, Marty Thomas Pennell was sentenced for a 2023 motorcycle crash that killed Vincente Matom-Cobo; prosecutors said Pennell was traveling above 100 mph, and he will serve 10 years of probation after prison. In Texas, Cristobal Stephan Garzez was sentenced for killing tow-truck driver David Zapata in a 2025 crash; jurors found Garzez guilty of intoxication manslaughter and determined his truck was a deadly weapon.
