Duluth Man Sentenced for Brimson Bait Shop Arson Attempt
Michael David Nelson Kunnari, 45, was sentenced to 28.5 months in prison—the top of the guideline range—for attempting to burn down Brimson Sportsmen’s Corner in rural St. Louis County. Prosecutors said Kunnari entered the bait shop with gasoline on June 27, 2026, confronted owner Thor Steenerson about his convictions involving child sexual abuse material, poured gasoline inside and tried to ignite a tissue; Steenerson stopped him and chased him out. The court also ordered Kunnari to pay $826.50 in restitution, and the judge denied his request for a non-prison sentence. Kunnari’s defense argued he was not a danger and had taken responsibility, while County Attorney Kim Maki said that even serious past crimes must be handled through the justice system, not vigilante violence.
