Eau Claire papers merged into Leader-Telegram after 130 years of family control
The Eau Claire Leader, founded in 1881, and the Eau Claire Daily Telegram, launched in 1894, were among the local newspapers that survived the region’s fiercely competitive press market. The papers merged in 1912 to form the Eau Claire Press Company, which was established by ancestors of the Atkinson and Graaskamp families. In 1970, the papers combined as the afternoon Leader-Telegram; after roughly 130 years of family ownership, APG bought the newspaper in 2018.
