ECB, SRB warn against weakening EU bank safeguards
ECB Supervisory Board Chair Claudia Buch and Single Resolution Board Chair Dominique Laboureix urged EU lawmakers to improve banks’ competitiveness without weakening safeguards built after past financial crises. Their recommendations include creating an EU-wide deposit insurance system, easing the movement of capital and liquidity within banking groups, and strengthening liquidity support for banks during resolution. They cautioned that simpler rules must preserve resilience, comply with international standards, and maintain clear distinctions among supervisory, macroprudential and resolution authorities. Separately, ECB Executive Board member Isabel Schnabel said governments should consolidate public finances and resist financial deregulation to protect the central bank’s ability to control inflation, warning against fiscal pressures taking precedence over price stability.
